This year marks the 25th anniversary of the passing of Keith Haring, a leading figure in 1980s American art, who died in 1990 at the young age of 31. Even as times and values continue to evolve, Haring’s works remain beloved around the world. Against the backdrop of 1980s America’s “light and shadow,” Haring undertook an extraordinarily prolific creative career over a span of just over ten years.

Reflecting the era’s social issues, Haring’s art expressed “hope and dreams for the future,” while simultaneously exploring darker themes such as “the madness of humanity.” His works embody both “light and shadow,” offering contrasting perspectives. In Japan, Haring’s legacy endures through exhibitions, workshops, and the launch of the Pop Shop, ensuring his art resonates across generations.

Through this exhibition, visitors are invited to experience Haring’s energetic expressions of “hope” and “dreams,” delve into his thoughts and life, reflect on the era he lived in, and immerse themselves in the unique world of Keith Haring.

The exhibition features works from the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection, the world’s first museum exclusively dedicated to Haring’s art. It includes prints, drawings, sculptures, and photographs, showcasing his humor and vibrant depictions of humans, dogs, and other subjects created with his signature simple lines—an enduring hallmark of 1980s American contemporary art.
