Patricia Field Art Collection: the World of Patricia Field

Jul 01, 2017 (Sat) - Nov 19, 2017 (Sun)
Venue: Nakamura Keith Haring Collection
Organized by Nakamura Keith Haring Collection
In Cooperation with: Patricia Field ARTFashion, The House of Field

The iconic boutique Patricia Field was a melting pot for the music culture scene’s scene sisters, celebrities, LGBTQ individuals, and fashion enthusiasts from all over the world. Regulars included Madonna, Deborah Harry, and Basquiat. In 1983, the East Village boutique sold the first-ever hand-painted T-shirts by Keith Haring, a perfect collaboration between Field’s concept that “fashion is wearable art” and Haring’s belief that “art is for everybody.”
Beyond its status as a fashion haven, the boutique was also notable for its art collection, which adorned its funky walls with paintings, photographs, posters, sculptures, and prints. While many of these works were by unknown artists, their explosive power complemented the boutique’s dazzling costumes.
The Patricia Field Art Collection comprises 300 pieces stored across her boutique, office, warehouse, and home. These pieces include works acquired by Field herself and those created by artists, designers, and fans inspired by Patricia Field. As Field puts it, “My art collection embodies my 50-year career and all my memories. It’s the treasure of the House of Field.”
Although the boutique closed in spring 2016 after half a century of cultural influence, 190 key works from its art collection are now housed at the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection. The upcoming exhibition explores the unique vision of Patricia Field and the origins of the Patricia Field boutique, a force in fashion movements. It also highlights the collection itself, which reflects freedom and creativity unconstrained by mainstream art trends or commercial ambition, akin to art brut.
Visitors will experience the raw power emanating from these works alongside Keith Haring’s art, creating a fusion that transcends time and space.
