NATURE
The Nakamura Keith Haring Collection was established in 2007 in Kobuchizawa, Hokuto City, nestled in the foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains, where the natural beauty of the area harmonizes with the museum. Hokuto City is known for its selection as one of Japan’s 100 best water sources and for having the longest hours of sunlight in the country. This museum, the only one in the world dedicated to the art of Keith Haring, one of the most iconic figures of American contemporary art, stands in a serene forest at an elevation of 3,280 feet, as clear and refreshing as the spring water that flows here.
At first glance, it may seem that Haring’s art, born in the bustling metropolis of New York, contrasts sharply with the natural beauty of Yatsugatake. However, this area was home to the Jomon culture, which flourished 5,000 to 10,000 years ago. Much like the African and indigenous cultures that influenced Haring, the Jomon culture was deeply rooted in spirituality and a reverence for nature and ancestry. This shared connection between art and the natural world reflects in Haring’s work, which continues to resonate with the mystical energy of the Yatsugatake landscape, evolving across time.
We hope that you feel the profound connection between art and the force of life in this beautiful natural setting.
