The Nakamura Keith Haring Collection presents its fifth installment in the “Curator’s Selection” series, which reexamines Keith Haring’s work through diverse perspectives. This exhibition, “Picking up the Pieces: Keith Haring’s Signs in Objects,” focuses on the symbolic nature of Haring’s art.
Recurring symbols such as the glowing baby, barking dog, flying saucer, pyramid, and dancing figures frequently appear in Haring’s work. These symbols, encoded by Haring, allow viewers to create various contexts and connections by combining these different images. Having studied semiotics, Haring deliberately adopted image encoding as a means to convey clearer messages to a broader audience through his art.
This exhibition explores a novel approach by reinterpreting Haring’s symbols as objects. Through this experimental disassembly of works composed of symbolic combinations, the exhibition seeks to uncover new interpretations of Haring’s art.
