About the Curator’s Selection

In 2012, the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection celebrates its 5th anniversary. As a commemorative project, the museum’s curators are launching the Curator’s Selection, a series of exhibitions showcasing selected works through multifaceted interpretations.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION

Keith Haring rose to fame through his Subway Drawings—drawings created with white chalk on unused black advertisement boards in the New York City subway. To avoid getting caught by the police, Haring had to work quickly, and this cultivated the sense of speed in his drawings. That sense of dynamism is a consistent thread throughout his work, creating vibrant, animated lines that define his art.

These lively lines also enabled Haring to depict unique movements in his creations. Two figures with their heads fused into an arch, a person bridging like a mollusk, or interpenetrating human forms—all movements that defy the constraints of reality come alive in Haring’s artistic universe, captivating viewers with their energy.

This exhibition highlights these depictions of movement, presenting eight works that reveal a new facet of Keith Haring’s enduring appeal.
