20th Anniversary Memorial Exhibition of Keith Haring’s Passing People, Love & Peace

Mar 20, 2010 (Sat) - Jan 10, 2011 (Mon)
Organizer: Nakamura Keith Haring Collection

In 1990, Keith Haring passed away at the young age of 31 due to AIDS. This year marks the 20th anniversary of his passing. From the streets and subways of New York, Haring established a unique art style that appealed to the general public, spreading the vibrant energy of 1980s New York art from America to the world. His prolific career included workshops around the globe and diverse social projects, all aimed at fostering communication between people through art. During his short but impactful life, Haring met countless individuals and built an infinite network of connections.

This exhibition focuses on Haring’s 1985 masterpiece Untitled (People), reexamining his work through the lens of human connections and bonds. Excerpts from Haring’s recently republished diary will also be on display, offering a glimpse into his complex and sensitive inner world. The exhibition further explores Haring’s primitive approach to art, as seen in his pyramids and totem pole works, along with newly acquired photographs by Tseng Kwong Chi, capturing body paintings on Bill T. Jones and Grace Jones.

Haring’s works often feature iconic depictions of people, such as his Radiant Baby, emphasizing themes of human interaction and communication. These ideas continue to resonate deeply, posing new questions to us in today’s increasingly diverse society.

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of his passing, Haring’s long-time friend Patricia Field has collaborated on a special collection available in her New York shop. Simultaneously, the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection POP SHOP is also presenting exclusive collaborative items with Patricia Field. Additionally, the museum is proud to announce the release of The Nakamura Keith Haring Collection, a book capturing the philosophy and message of the museum’s collection, bringing its message from Kobuchizawa to the world.

Yasumichi Ishida “Enkan: Myomaku” Traveling Exhibition

Dates: Saturday, March 20, 2010 – Saturday, April 24, 2010

Venue: Nakamura Keith Haring Collection

About the “Enkan: Myomaku” Project

Set against the natural backdrop of the Fossa Magna, a geological rift that traverses Japan, the Enkan: Myomaku project is a year-long journey led by Yasumichi Ishida, who embodies the character of Momotaro. Accompanied by a massive, cocoon-shaped object, Ishida travels from the Sea of Japan to the Pacific Ocean, crossing Honshu. The journey unfolds as a “voyage of discovery,” aimed at exploring the true essence of abundance through interactions and connections with the land, communities, and individuals he encounters.

During this journey, the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection serves as a space for “rebirth,” continuing the cycle of life. Ishida’s project aligns seamlessly with the museum’s exhibition theme honoring the 20th anniversary of Haring’s passing, People, Love & Peace. Visitors are invited to experience this profound project that celebrates connection and regeneration.
